The Celts were a polytheistic peoples, believing that spirits existed within all aspects of the world. These culturally rich populations were primarily pagan, but elements of Christianity were incorporated as the religion spread. Most pieces from the Celts were smithed from metal and stone. Precious medals such as gold represented wealth and power. Subject matter was abstracted and commonly displayed references to both flora and fauna;relating to the elements; indicating that the earth was sacred in their lives. Dominated by intricate radial, repetitive designs and knots, the Celtic style assimilated Christian symbols like biblical figures and crucifixes to their design. Designs such as the lyre scroll, leaf crown, and running dog were inspirational to many pieces. The gold shield above showcases the lyre scroll mimicked four times, with timeless stippling wrapping around the design. It may be bold of me to say, but this may very well be the birth of paisley. The tear shaped jewels bounce along the shield, referencing air or water.
This repetition is done out of a belief that the more times you can get the divine on an object the more divine power it possess.
